So, why are you here now? Tiffany asked.
The Separatists overstretched themselves and became weak. The Federation has reclaimed almost all
of the lost colonies and there s a liberation force on its way here from Falant VI. Its estimated arrival is two
weeks time. I need to get a message to them because they re going to need reinforcements since Tarug s
    fleet appears to be staying.
The room filled with murmurs, some of surprise, most of relief. For Yumi the weight of the Rock was
    lighter on her shoulders.
The Federation is finally here? someone asked.
Yes. Tomas nodded. Over the last six months Dante has become a borderline system again. The
Federation is aiming to push the border back even farther throughout the local stars. The Dante system,
with your help, could be the hub of those operations.
Yumi listened with interest. Becoming the hub of anything sounded like a very lucrative deal, not to
mention being free from the damn Separatist soul suckers. The only problem would be having anything left
of the colony to create a hub.
So we have to try and hold out against the Seps for two weeks? Tiffany asked.
Give or take a day or two, yes. Tomas agreed. Unless you can delay the theft of the alien ship for a
    few days.
Tiffany shook her head. Can t, she said. They ve taken my daughter for Centimation. She s only
    six years old.
They started the Centimation? Tomas s posture hardened and his face turned grim. Then we go
    rescue her, all of them.
Tiffany looked startled by that answer, but also extremely pleased. When?
Yumi saw Tomas at the various vidscreens, obviously formulating a plan in his mind.
In three hours, he said. As soon as I ve brought the equipment we ll need from my rooms. Would
you mind if I borrowed some of your men?
If it will get my daughter and the other colonists bac Tiffany waved an arm across the room,
you re welcome to my entire army.

Once we have her safe Tomas nodded at the screen and the alien space ship slowly being pulled
from the lava, we ll see if we can find a way to get hold of that.
Tiffany nodded. Good, she said. I ll get the evacuation of the colonists underway. I don t want any
of them up there when that& ship& goes missing.

    Chapter Eight
Useless! Marcus slapped the report on his desk. The corporal who d brought the datacard winced.
Lieutenant Graheem had sent the man instead of reporting his own failure. You mean Nuim died under
torture and he didn t reveal a thing about the stolen data?
No, sir. The corporal spoke quickly. His statements came out ninety-eight percent truthful on the
Prdometer scan. He believes someone stole it from him.
Marcus let fly a few more choice swear words. The Prdometer scan was a thousand times more
accurate than the ancient lie detectors used to be. Sprizer was probably the thief. Now they had to find him.
Where did they find Nuim? Marcus asked, barely keeping his temper.
Level Seven, sir, wandering along some of the unfinished tunnels in section four-a. The patrol said
    he appeared to be lost.
Send down patrols and a team of forensics with a DNA sniffer. I want that area and the tunnels for
five hundred yards in each direction scoured. Marcus pulled out a set of orders he d just saved and signed
them with his electronic signature. He passed the datacard to the nervous corporal. And set up another
thirty search teams. I want Levels Five, Six and Seven taken to pieces. Sprizer is down there somewhere
    and I want him alive.
     Yes, sir.
     Dismissed.
The corporal saluted sharply then left the office quickly. Marcus turned to his workpad. Things were
going from bad to worse way too quickly and he d heard tales of Tarug s rewards for failure. He switched
his screen to one of the security vids set up on the surface. This one overlooked the back of the launching
pads, where thousands of metal containers held fuel for the ships. The back-up supply should the
underground reservoirs fail, or additional fleets, like now, appeared.
Behind them, carefully checked over by his engineers, sat a Carrion Fighter. Sleek, fast and with
stealth capabilities, it would be his way to safety should he fail to find that datacube.
Marcus was beginning to stock it now.
Yumi almost laughed at the soldiers reactions when Tomas walked through a wall.
Come on through, he encouraged. Nothing here will hurt you.
    S.J. Willing
When they balked at the false stone Yumi stepped ahead and cautiously stepped through the
hologram. This time she scraped a little against one wall. Looking back she could see the soldiers, pale
faced, staring at the wall image for a moment longer before the first one followed her example and walked
    in.
All of them looked around in amazement at Tomas s handiwork.
Wasting no time, Tomas went to the small storage room to one side. Opening one of the armory boxes
he took out a vicious-looking handgun and some clips. Slipping one clip into the gun he put the rest in a
pocket, then passed the case to one of the soldiers.
Vollier s and RPAPs, he told the youth. Might come in handy. The bemused private simply
nodded, then stepped away to allow the next soldier in. Tomas threw another box in his hands. Holograph
    generators, good for ambush.
Tomas continued like this until all ten soldiers had a heavy box each.
Okay, I want you two to stand guard just inside the holo. Rest of you take a break while I try and get
    a message to base.
The soldiers sat on boxes, chairs and tables talking quietly. The time for the uprising was getting
nearer and it subdued everyone s need for conversation. Tomas sat at one of the terminals and immediately
shut down to the rest of the world.
What about me? Yumi demanded. What do I carry?
Tomas looked up at her, temporarily distracted. Get yourself one of these guns, and some RPAPs.
You ll need them. Then he once again lost himself in the terminal. [ Pobierz całość w formacie PDF ]
