raises cats. But I don't know why most people keep cats; I was just trying to
think why, and now I see it didn't sound very complimentary. You keep cats
because Tim does, I suppose. I mean," as Elsie showed signs of not liking that
very well either, "he offered you some, so you took them. But they are such a
nuisance all pets are. So much work, when you could be doing other things. I
don't mind digging worms " he drove the fork into the ground, turned over a
clod, and broke it up "once in a while, but I'd hate to have to do it every
day. That's one thing about snakes, they don't bark, or jump all over you "
"They don't have to be fed every day, either," remarked Robin.
"Well, it wasn't because I have cats, or not even about the eggs entirely but
you make me so mad, Fred! You don't understand anything!"
"Why do people keep cats, then?"
    "What eggs?" asked Robin.
"Oh, that was a while back, Robin," said Elsie impatiently, and returned to
the real issue. "People keep cats because they like cats! Don't you even
realize that people can like things you don't?"
"Lots of people say cats are sneaky and treacherous, but I don't think so, any
more than snakes are," said Robin, manfully accepting the fact that the matter
of the eggs was not to be explained to him. 'They just act according to their
natures. As Fred says, cats don't bark. Not being scavengers, they come
quietly to catch their prey; and a cat has as much right to eat its dinner as
    any other creature."
"I like cats because they are independent," said Elsie, "and they are
graceful, and so efficient I think they are the most perfect of all animals,

the way they move, the way they spring, the way they relax. And they are good
company, when they want to be. But, Fred, you do assign the most perverted
    motives to people!"
"After all, a pet is, by definition, something to pet," said Robin. "I don't
know if you could call a snake a pet at all. Most people like a pet to be a
little responsive. I keep snakes because they are interesting."
"There are three worms in that clump!" cried Elsie, pouncing upon one. "Fred,
I'm sorry I threw that jar at you. I always used to throw things when I was "
"In the hospital," Fred supplied hastily.
"Oh, it's no secret in the asylum. I'd go tell Dr. Foxwell on myself, but then
I'd have to explain, and "
"Oh, cancel it out cancel it out," said Fred. "I'm sorry about the eggs, too.
There's no sense making a mystery out of things. I played some fool tricks
when I first came, Robin; turned up Elsie's incubator and cooked all the eggs,
    for one thing."
"No need to tell," said Elsie, "but since it came up, I suppose it's better.
I'm sorry I mentioned it, I just didn't stop to think. Only you know, Robin,
we can't go all the way back and explain everything, every time a new boy or
    girl comes."
"I'm out of sorts today anyway," admitted Fred. That's why I came out. I was
looking for Tim and the others, and thinking about asking them something. You
too, Elsie you're one of the old-timers. Do you know where Tim is? You know,
Robin, Tim is sort of head boy around here."
They're all in the hall, I think," said Robin. This is enough worms. You go
on; I'll stay and feed my snakes."
"No, I want you to come with us," said Fred. "There's no secret about it, just
so we don't have to go into a long explanation of the whole background. I want
    your help too. Come on!"
Most of the boys and girls were in the hall, reading, listening to the radio,
and eating apples, when the trio arrived; and Fred, after a glance around to
assure himself that most of the "old-timers" were there, went up front and
smacked the table with the gavel.
"If you aren't too busy, I want to ask you something," he said. "I was
thinking about it, and then Elsie made me mad, so I'm going to."
Beth switched off the radio, and they all came nearer to listen.
"I've been talking to Dr. Welles for a whole month," Fred said, "and reading
all he gave me, and I can't see that we're getting anywhere. You know how
grownups are, they take forever to get anything done. We live at a different
tempo. Now, some of you know quite a lot about this business of developing the
neglected and repressed functions of the personality and those who don't will
please shut up; I'm talking to those who do and you don't know as much as the
doctor, maybe, but you wouldn't be so slow about it. Some of you have read
more than I have, of course, and you must understand it better than I do, [ Pobierz całość w formacie PDF ]
